Overhyped & Disappointing Products

5.11.12

I spend such a long time researching new purchases with the help of my favourite blogs, YouTube and Makeup Alley that I'm not often disappointed - but, as I'm sure we all do, I've bought into the hype around products on more than one occasion. While it normally results in an amazing new product, I sometimes don't understand the high praise products receive. So I thought I'd gather together those products lurking in my cupboard that I either wouldn't repurchase or which just didn't live up to their rave reviews.

If you have any 'favourite' overhyped or disappointing products I'd love to know what they are!

  1. Some really good tips :) I had no idea that Philip Kingsley was essentially just castor oil!

Note to self... pay attention to ingredients!

    Great video Meg xx

  2. I haven't watched your video (yet) but I see those two Sigma brushes and I know EXACTLY what you mean - I bought them both and they're absolutely crap. The handles aren't even straight either and they shed like a mother.

  3. I like these kind of videos because there is nothing worse then forking out for an expensive product then finding it really disappointing x

  4. I find these kinds of video really interesting. Thank you and it didn't come across too negative or ranty. You jut gave sensible, perfectly valid reasons for not liking said products. That's fair enough!

  5. Phillip Kingsley is poop, I've never understood why people rave about it! My Sigma blush brush is ok, doesn't shed too much unless I wash it x

  6. These are some of my favourite types of videos as you get to see and hear honest opinions.

I've never tried Essie nail polishes, I've always wanted to but I decided to go cruelty free in August so I can't buy them now anyway. It's nice to know I'm not missing out on too much :)

    Geat video Meg

  10. I think it was me that asked about better polishes than Essie ~ i remember asking someone anyway! Thanks for the Zoya rec...

I find Bioderma H20 overhyped. It does a good job and if you could buy it in boots fair enough but people go to ridiculous lengths to track it down and it's not worth doing that when the Vichy and La-Roche Posay ones do the exactly the same job. Here in France, supermarket micellar water is about 5€ so you are really only paying for the hype - all micellar water works on the same principle and contain FOC's as the main ingredient.

I do think MAC (*shock*) is a little overhyped as you can get brands with similar colours and pigmentations for cheaper.

I thought the elasticer was good but perhaps it was because of the ingredients and not the brand.

    :)

  11. Seems like we have similar tastes because I definitely agree with you on some of these products! I didn't have much luck with the Stila Kitten or Laura Mercier mineral powder. Thanks for a great video :)

  13. Ahhh I hate when brushes shed those black hairs on my face, I don't want to walk around looking like I'm taking part in Movember! That's why I love my Real Techniques brushes, so far no shedding at all!x

  14. Aaah great video! I was all ready to shell out for the Purity cleanser too!
What were you recommending as an eye-makeup remover? Was it "chlorine" remover, or something, couldn't quite hear. xx

  15. I loved this video Meg!! I always value your opinion as when I've tried out products you've liked in the past I've always loved them too! Also, I thought exactly the same about the Phillip Kingsley Elasticizer as well as Essie nail polishes, they don't last a week on me either. Usually they chip after 3 days and I use a base and top coat :(

  16. I love these types of videos and do them myself each month; I personally don't get along with essie nail polishes either and think they are WAY overhyped!!

  18. I personally love Essie Nail Polishes - they stay on my nails for a week with a top coat. And this is a rare for me - usually they chip, but some kind of reason, Essie ones don't. And they go on very smooth as well. So I don't know :D Maybe my nails just just Essie.

  19. I've heard lots of people say the same things about Essie but they're one of the polishes that last longest on me! Mine tend to last for about a week, sometimes more, chip free. How strange!

I'd love to see an underhyped products post too. x

  20. I always buy into hype and they are never what I think they will be, but I love the laura mericer!

  21. I, too, have a really hard time with Essie varnishes. They don't stay, and the overall opacity can be iffy on the lighter colors (Mint Candy Apple is hit or miss.)

Also, that Philosophy cleanser is CRAP. I bought it with my Clarisonic, and together they gave me terrible, terrible acne. I used them together for six months, and then returned my Clarisonic two months ago and am still struggling to get my skin back to where it was. I have finally started using the surprisingly cheap and effective Effaclar line by La Roche-Posay, and I'm looking better, but it still isn't the same. I had occasional blemishes before, but my skin became truly terrible. I kept using it, thinking it was a reactionary breakout, a "purging" of the skin, but it wasn't.

I tend to be so happy when I find someone else who isn't fond of a "cult" product, because I always feel like I'm just using it wrong or something when everything loves a product that just... doesn't work for me.

  22. Love it when people do these kinds of posts and reviews. It is one thing to talk about what your favorites are to give an indication but it is another to actually talk about..well how crappy or unamazing they were.
