Boots Botanics Cleansing Balm

15.7.12

I've mentioned Boots Botanics Face Soothing Cleansing Balm a few times (most recently in my empties video) as a great option for an affordable balm cleanser. However Boots have recently repackaged and relaunched their Botanics range and I've just noticed on the Boots website that they have changed the formula.

The new formula is 97% organic compared to the previous 92% but it now has 17 instead of 14 ingredients - and one of those new ingredients is fragrance. The previous formula was mostly Shea butter, this has now been bumped down the list and replaced with olive oil which is, generally, a cheaper ingredient but the price has gone up by around £2. I haven't tried the new formula myself so I can't pass judgement on it, but I just thought I'd give you a heads up as it could possibly be more irritating to sensitive skin types and basically isn't the same product I've recommended in the past!

Old ingredients: Butyrospermum parkii butter*, Simmondsia chinensis (Jojoba) seed oil*, Cera alba (Beeswax)*, Cetearyl alcohol, Sorbitan laurate, Persea gratissima oil*, Citrus aurantium bergamia (Bergamot) oil*, Limonene*, Pelargonium graveolens flower oil, Linalool*, Rosa damascena flower oil*, Citronellol*, Geraniol*, Citral*

New ingredients: Olea europaea (Olive) fruit oil*, Simmondsia chinensis (Jojoba) seed oil*, Cera alba (Beeswax)*, Butyrospermum parkii (Shea) butter*, Prunus amygdalus dulcis (Sweet almond) oil*, Cetearyl alcohol, Rosa canina seed oil*, Limonene, Citronellol, Pelargonium graveolens flower oil, Citrus aurantium dulcis peel extract*, Linalool, Citrus aurantium bergamia (Bergamot) fruit oil, Citrus medica limonum (Lemon) peel oil, Geraniol, Parfum (Fragrance), Citral

  2. Hmm not liking the price increase especially if the ingredients are cheaper. I'm still curious to try it though as I never had the chance to try the old one before it got taken off the shelves! Really helpful post, appreciate you making us aware of the changes! :)

  3. I am so grumpy at this rebrand!! My holy grail moisturizer is from the old Botanics range, and now it's disappeared. I have tried a couple from the new range and absolutely nothing is agreeing with my sensitive skin, which is annoying because the new day creams in this range are much more expensive than they were previously, which isn't cool when you then cant use them. Thanks for giving people the heads up about this Meg!

  7. I hate when brands say "new improved formula" and it's not!! It's annoying! Thanks for giving us the heads up! x

  8. Annoyed about the price increase, but I guess it's linked to the new packaging? Even so, completely unfair.

I'm slightly put off trying it now, but I think in Winter I'll need something like this.

Thanks for the heads up or I'd probably have been ignorant to it! x

  9. Not impressed that they've gotten rid of the sensitive oil free moisturiser. It was perfect for under makeup, but I've seen they've got a mattifying gel cream now. Might investigate it, hope it works as well!

  12. Ive not tried this product before, but i noticed the range had been re packaged & wasn't keen at all on their new look. I think it looks cheap now & not so appealing. Thats a shame that they have felt the need to change the ingredients too. I think they will loose alot of loyal customers. There is so much choice out there so why would people buy something that doesn't work for them
Such a shame. I think they have got this all wrong,

  14. I've wanted to try out this cleansing balm for a while, and was so sad to hear that it was discontinued a while back. I just learned that it was being repackaged last week, and was so very gleeful. However, if the ingredients are different, I'm not sure I'd still be willing to pick up a jar.

  15. I bought the new one as I never tried the old one, had heard a lot about it though! I can't seem to get on with it, I feel like it leaves an oily film on my face! xo

  16. I'd never tried the old one but I bought the new one and I love it, I'd only ever use it once every few days though as it is SO moisturising! pity I never got to try the original as everyone goes on about preferring it! very interesting post xx

  17. I also didn't get the chance to try the old one but after you mentioned it on a video, I thought'd I'd try it. This is my first balm and I have very sensitive skin. It is extremely oily and stays on my skin for ages which is weird to me BUT it takes off makeup like a dream. I use it at night and in the morning my face feels pretty amazing, so my skin loves it. Would love to know what you think about the new one if you get around to trying it out.xx

  18. I've heard lots of good things about the range, however the price increase is a bit typical really!

  19. This sounds quite good, I do love balm / oil / cream cleansers. Although its quite a small pot, I'm guessing you only need a small amount. I really want to try the Emma Hardie Moringa balm soon!

  22. I've wanted to try this (the old formula) after your recommendation!

Now I'm not too sure, ive been using the Boots Botanics oil based eye make up remover which had two layers for ages, picked up the new formula since i ran out and this new one actually stung my eyes!!

  23. Hmm I just bought this, after your recommendation (didn't realise they changed the ingredients and the packaging!) damn it, I haven't tried it yet but obviously I hadn't tried it before so I wouldn't be able to compare..

  24. Was linked to this one by EssieButton, interesting to hear that a cheaper ingredient is predominant but price has increased >< I think I would still give this a go as I love cleansing balms in general, but time will tell if my skin agrees with it or not.

  25. I have been using the Botanics facial scrub for years and it was lovely, I bought the new one yesterday thinking it was like for like and it is greasy - olive oil and the fragrance is overwhelming! What on earth have they done tht for!!

  26. I have been using the Botanics face scrub for years, perfect product? Went to replace it yesterday and was told tht they had repackaged the range but of course they have replaced, the product too. The new face scrub is greasy and highly fragrance - really horrible to use. I will be taking my complaint directly to them. Why couldn't they just leave well alone. I could understand if the product didn't sell but I frequently had to ask for some to be put on the shelves!

  27. The old product was fantastic and the new improved formula is a real disappointment. Serious break-outs mean that this product has now been consigned to the rubbish heap and the search is on once more for something that works. Shame on you Boots!!

  28. I never tried the origional formula, but I have been using the new one since it was launched. I picked up loads of the Botanics stuff as it was a third off. I LOVE this cleansing balm, and it has kept my skin very clear and moisturised. I have been using it morning and night and I am sure my skin is better for it. I also think it lasts very well. I honestly prefer it to Eve Lom which I have used before (so expensive). This balm is very good at removing makup. The botanics facial spritz toner is also fab! I follow using the balm with this and have found it very soothing. Also removes any last traces of the balm on your face. And so handy in a spray, I hate the fiddle of normal toners with all that cotton wool. would definitely repurchase.
