Alpha H Liquid Gold

26.3.12

I've been promising a review of Alpha-H Liquid Gold for what seems like ages. So here it is. I wish I had a before and after to help but I guess I started using it not expecting it to do an awful lot - or not sure exactly what it would do.

'Alpha-H Liquid Gold is a highly effective resurfacing and firming lotion for your skin. Recognised for its natural medicinal properties, liquorice within Alpha-H Liquid Gold visibly reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, hyper-pigmentation, sun damage, acne, scarring and breakouts. The complex formula consists of glycolic acid, recognised for its rejuvenating qualities combined with the soothing and softening properties of liquorice root extract. Together these gently stimulate the production of collagen whilst creating a complexion that is lighter, clearer, and more even.'

I still use my Clarisonic, however for exfoliating purposes I find chemical exfoliants far superior...and one such chemical exfoliant is Glycolic Acid. It works by weakening the binding lipids (or melting the glue, if you prefer) that hold dead skin cells onto your skin. As a result chemical exfoliants, like Liquid Gold, are much more effective for achieving 'glowing' skin than manual exfoliants because they actively dislodge dead skin cells without being abrasive.

Used twice a week this keeps my skin clear and glowy. I pour out enough to saturate one cotton pad (but use two - so both are 50% saturated) and sweep across my face and neck. You can follow with moisturiser if you wish but I don't bother as I find my skin is comfortable enough without it. I wouldn't recommend using this on broken skin, however I have swiped it over active and healing breakouts and it didn't irritate them at all - in fact I would go as far as to say it speeds healing and helps to prevent blemishes from leaving marks.

The fading of scars has been the most noticeable effect for me. I've never had severe acne, but some small, stubborn areas of scarring and hyper-pigmentation that I have had for years have now virtually disappeared. I also think using Liquid Gold has dramatically reduced the frequency of the spots I do get, as they are pretty much all now contained in one week per month (if ya know what I mean).

I would dare to call this a hero product. It's something I can see myself purchasing over and over again as the effects have been so noticeable on my skin. It is quite an investment at £31.50 for 100ml, however I have been using it regularly for 5 months and have just under half a bottle left which makes it great value for money in my opinion.

Available from Lookfantastic.

Have you tried anything from Alpha-H? Are you a fan of chemical exfoliants?

  1. I've never thought about exfoliating like this before but this really does sound good, especially for the amount of product you get! xxx

  2. I'm 17, have fairly good skin but always on the look out to improve the glow. Do you think it's worth me investing in this, or would it be a bit overkill for my skin right now?

    1. hmm i'd probably give it a miss for now - i would have thought at 17 your cell turnover is quite rapid, but i'm no scientist! 'mechanical' exfoliation is probably enough, especially if your skin is already good :) x

  4. The name of this product always makes me giggle. Liquid gold... hehehe.

I have started using chemical exfoliants myself (not this particular one though, an Avene and Vichy one) and have been VERY happy with the results. My skin is visibly smoother, brighter and less oily. Like you, I have used such products on my active breakouts and it has helped them a lot. And like you, I also use them in combination with my Clarisonic. I feel like you really can't go wrong with chemical exfoliants unless you feel like your skin is already perfect ;)

  6. Alpha-H is, to use the technical term, DA BOMB.

Everything they do is so brilliant and truly, truly works. I highly recommend the Absolute Eye Complex and the Balancing Cleanser.

    All Hail Liquid Gold. x

  7. Do you use an SPF moisturiser during the day? I've heard it is essential with chemical exfoliants x

  13. Do you suffer from blocked pores or blackheads? I need something amazing to get rid of mine and wondering if this is the product for the job. normal exfoliating and cleansing just isn't cutting it.

    1. not particularly but it may help remove dead skin cells without irritating the skin before they get a chance to block up pores. have you tried regular steaming? x

  16. I've been looking into trying out chemical exfoliators for a while not because I find that regular ones just don't cut it anymore. I've been breaking out more recently too so I think I might give this a go and see if it does a similar job on my grumpy skin :)
    Thanks for the post!

  17. I'm coming up 18 and don't have very good skin - spots/ blackheads/ general bad texture, do you think this product would help clear that up or would it be too harsh for my skin? x

  18. I purchased Liquid Gold over 3 weeks ago now and use it every night with every second night - no follow-up moisturiser and suddenly, after many years, the blackheads on my nose are GONE.
    I am amazed.
I also am now 1 month supposedly overdue for my 6monthly botox - and guess what, I am not going. Dont need too. This product is amazing for my sun damaged 46 year old skin. Its smoother, brighter and I cant see the crows feet either, plus I think it has helped for my week long once a month breakouts too. Only had one little spot appear and normally there are quite a few.

I have just ordered the eye complex serum - so lets see how that goes. I have genetic bags with some blackish circles....nothing has helped in the past.............but I am really hopeful that this line of products maybe just what I have been wishing for.

  19. I'm facinated by all the positive comments and of course I'm eager to try this product out. I'm a little worried though. As a mature woman (55 yrs young) I have recently developed rosacea. Will Liquid Gold be suitable for my skin type?

  20. definitely going to buy this after reading your review. sounds amazing xx

  21. Would you still recommend this for someone who has acne-prone skin and has a few hyperpigmentation spots? Especially if they're in their late teens? (18-19) It seems like such a great product but I am unsure whether to slather on such a luxurious, miracle product that is probably best targeted for 20s and above.
